Cory’s snoring woke me up. I stifled the urge to smother him with a pillow and rolled over, slowly drifting off again.

Short dreams followed, each one strange and unsettling. I was giving birth, but it wasn’t like when I had Sophie. I was lying on my back on an animal skin beneath the stars, a campfire flickering at the edge of my vision. A midwife held my hand while her other hand rubbed my stomach with a foul-smelling ointment that was warm on my skin.

She chanted in a strange language I’d never heard before. She peered down at me, her face only inches from mine, and spoke. Now, I could understand what she said.

“The world is grateful to you, Mother of Life.”

Mother of Life?

My contractions increased in timing and severity, while sparks from the fire swirled in the sky. No, it was the stars themselves that were swirling.

The pain was intense, and I was drenched in sweat. What happened to my epidural? I wondered.

“Where’s the doctor? I need another shot.”

The midwife didn’t answer me. Instead, she placed a branch of aromatic leaves upon my heaving stomach.

I think I fainted briefly. When I came to, the midwife was helping the baby from me. I moaned in pain. The midwife smiled with delight and held the baby up for me to see.

It was slick with amniotic fluid. But it wasn’t my baby. It couldn’t be.

It was a tiny calf.

I screamed in horror.

And went straight into the next dream. I was deep in a vast forest of towering trees. Although it was daytime, the forest was dark from the tree shade. I wore a soft tunic of silk and strode upon sandals through the trees, listening to the happy cacophony of voices coming from beneath the soil.

The trees were talking to each other. And I was their mother—not just the mother of the trees, but of all the creatures in the forest and the countryside. I walked among the trees and bushes feeling their love for me, returning it with all my heart. My purpose was to protect and nourish them, while their purpose was to grow and reproduce, bringing oxygen for other creatures to breathe, as well as produce fruit and nuts for the forest creatures to eat.

The birds were mine. The insects were mine. The creek that ran nearby was inhabited by my children, too.

With my love, I felt an enormous responsibility for the welfare of my children. I also felt power. I didn’t know exactly what the power was, but it made me feel invincible and able to shape the world in beneficial ways.

I felt as if I could tear the evils of the world asunder. In fact, I heard the walls of an evil city tumbling down—

No. That sound was Cory snoring.

I lay awake, thinking about my dream, still vivid in my memory. It wasn’t like me to have grandiose dreams like that. Maybe it was something I ate the night before.

My dreams are usually forgotten the moment I set my feet on the floor.
